Then, you need to\nfind the luggage for an upcoming trip and have to pull everything out to find it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, it\u2019s possible to organize the garage so your\nbelongings and car can coexist in the same space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start with a plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you dive into your garage, create a plan for the big\nclean out. You can set aside a full day or weekend to get the job done. If\nyou\u2019re short on time, break it down into several jobs over a few weekends. Make\norganizing the garage a family project to make the task go faster. Make sure\nyou have the right tools at hand to make the process go smoother. You don\u2019t\nwant to waste time driving to the home improvement store mid-cleaning! A few\nhelpful supplies include a shop-vac or broom, heavy-duty trash bags, and a\ncatch-all basket for smaller odds and ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now is also a great time to figure out how you want to use\nthe garage once you\u2019re done. This plan will guide your process. Divide the\ngarage into zones for the different types of items that will be stored in the\ngarage. Common zones include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Car parking\/supplies<\/li><li>Sports and recreation equipment<\/li><li>Seasonal d\u00e9cor<\/li><li>Storage<\/li><li>Workshop\/work area<\/li><li>Garden<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating zones, like a department store, will make it easier\nfor everyone to know where a particular item should be placed. It\u2019s recommended to start with 4 zones and expand out as\nneeded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clear out the garage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you have a plan, it\u2019s time to get started. Clear\neverything out in the garage and begin sorting based on your chosen zones.\nDetermine whether you\u2019ll keep, toss, donate or sell each item. You\u2019ll want to\nget rid of any items that are broken beyond repair, things you haven\u2019t used in\na couple years and any expired household chemicals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For any items you\u2019re keeping, group them together based on\nzones so you know exactly where to put them when it\u2019s time to store everything\naway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do a basic cleaning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before putting your items back into the garage, take\nadvantage of the empty space and give it a good cleaning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plan garage storage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a lot of different types of storage systems. Don\u2019t\nrush out and buy a custom system! Your first step is to assess your remaining\nitems that will be stored in the garage and plan how you want to store them.\nYou don\u2019t have to run out and buy a fancy storage system. You can start with\nwhat you have now and build up as needed. Here are some common storage options:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Shelving units: this can include wall-mounted\nshelves or stand-alone shelving racks <\/li><li>Wall storage: pegboards or fancy storage systems\ncan be customized to fit every storage need<\/li><li>Storage cabinets: cabinets are best for items\nthat need to be securely stored like chemicals or paint<\/li><li>Overhead storage: the ceiling is valuable\nstorage space. Place rarely-used items like holiday decorations and other items\nthat can\u2019t easily be stored on the walls.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Stackable plastic bins with lids are great to store items.\nEven if you use clear bins, be sure to label everything so you can quickly determine\nthe contents of a bin without having to open it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep your garage looking great<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Congratulations! You\u2019ve put in the hard work to get your\ngarage organized. Now it\u2019s up to you to keep it maintained. Garages are high\ntraffic areas so take time to review and make sure everything is in its proper\nplace.
